Picture the scene. It’s half past midnight on a drizzly Wednesday at your local syndicate water, somewhere in the East Midlands. Your rod tip plunges, the clutch screams, and after a fifteen-minute battle you’ve got a proper double-figure common rolling in the margins. And then — crunch. A cheap, knotted mesh with the depth of … Read more
Picture the scene. It’s 2am on a Cheshire reservoir, the temperature has dropped to something that a meteorologist would generously describe as “brisk,” a light drizzle is tapping on your bivvy, and somewhere out in the darkness, a carp is circling your bait. You should be dozing, resting, recharging. Instead, you’re lying there like a … Read more
Let’s be honest — Britain doesn’t get the howling Siberian winters that some outdoor gear guides seem to assume you’re preparing for. What it does get is something arguably more treacherous: cold that’s persistent, damp that’s bone-deep, and weather systems that can turn a mild October evening into a miserable, frost-bitten ordeal by 3 a.m. … Read more
There’s a particular kind of misery that only British anglers truly understand. You’ve driven two hours to a quiet reservoir in the Midlands, set up your bivvy in fading April light, and by 2 a.m. the temperature has dropped to 4°C. Your sleeping bag — the one you grabbed cheap off a market stall — … Read more
There’s a moment every British carp angler knows all too well. It’s 2 a.m., the temperature has dropped sharper than expected, the drizzle is tapping relentlessly on the bivvy skin, and you’re lying there, rigid and miserable, counting down to dawn instead of fishing. Your rods are rigged perfectly. Your bait is spot-on. But none … Read more
There’s a moment every carp angler knows. It’s 3am, the bivvy is damp from the night’s drizzle, your bite alarm hasn’t stirred in six hours, and the only thing standing between you and a truly miserable blank session is your bedchair. If that bedchair is a creaking, foam-padded relic that sags like a deflated lilo, … Read more
There is a moment every carp angler knows. It is three in the morning, the bivvy is hammering with rain, your alarms are silent, and you should — technically — be asleep. Instead you are wedged diagonally across a standard bedchair like a human game of Tetris, one shoulder dangling off the edge, the other … Read more
Let me be blunt: if you’re still waking up with a numb shoulder and a crick in your neck after an overnight session, you’re doing it wrong. I’ve tested dozens of bedchairs across rain-soaked lakes in the Lake District, wind-battered reservoirs in the Midlands, and muddy banks along the Thames. What most anglers overlook isn’t … Read more
After spending countless nights on various British lakesides from the Cotswolds to the Scottish borders, I’ve learnt one uncomfortable truth: a poor bedchair doesn’t just ruin your sleep—it ruins your entire session. When you’re tackling a 48-hour stint in late October rain, or setting up for a weekend at Linear Fisheries, the difference between a … Read more
Anyone who’s spent a damp October afternoon on the banks of a Midlands reservoir knows the peculiar torture of British fishing weather. One minute you’re bathed in watery sunshine, the next you’re being pelted by horizontal rain that somehow finds every gap in your waterproofs. It’s precisely this unpredictability that’s driven the rise of brolly … Read more
