There’s a specific kind of quiet that falls over a canal towpath an hour after sunset, right before it isn’t quiet at all — a rod tip nods, then buries, and somewhere out in the black water something with a mouthful of needle teeth has just made its move. Zander do their best work in … Read more
Zander are the ghosts of British still waters. One cast they’re not there, the next you’ve got a fish with eyes like a cat’s and teeth like a bag of pins thrashing about your net, and you’re left wondering how something that size stayed invisible for three hours. If you’ve ever blanked on a canal … Read more
Zander are odd fish, if you think about it. Bright yellow eyes built for hunting in the dark, a temperament somewhere between “aggressive predator” and “mildly suspicious accountant,” and a reputation for making grown anglers question their life choices on a cold February morning. You don’t need a tackle box worth more than your car … Read more
There’s a specific kind of heartbreak reserved for zander anglers: you feel the faintest tap, tap, nothing — and by the time you’ve struck, whatever was down there has already spat the lure out and vanished back into the murk. Gone is the lazy assumption that these stripy little predators are pushovers. Micro jigs for perch have quietly become … Read more
Stand on any towpath in Britain on a crisp fenland morning and you’ll eventually spot two camps of perch angler: the ones twitching a tiny jig on a short, snappy retrieve, and the ones patiently shaking a bait suspended a foot off the deck on a length of fluorocarbon. Ask either which method is “better” … Read more
There’s a very particular thrill in watching a rod tip barely twitch, knowing full well a perch has just inhaled a soft plastic sitting motionless six inches off the bottom. Drop shot fishing for perch is a finesse lure technique where a hook is tied part-way up the line, with a small weight below it, … Read more
There’s a particular kind of silence that happens the moment a perch inhales a drop shot worm sitting motionless six inches off the canal bed. No violent take, no thrashing surface strike, just a faint tap, tap, and then that unmistakable heavy resistance that tells you it’s a proper stripey and not a foul-hooked twig. … Read more
